The bruise I was expecting finally showed up today ... a good 8 inches lower than the location of the "pop" I felt on Wednesday. I guess blood settles wherever it wants.

Bummer about the first stage of the Tour of California getting wiped out by snow. Logging too many miles, many of them tend to be "junk" miles - unnecessary miles that don't do much to improve anything other than endurance. Quality versus quantity. Also, for the quad, KT Tape is very useful. I actually have a strip on my right quad right now as my fit is a bit off on the road bike and it gets inflamed and sore after about 30 min of riding. The KT Tape lifts the skin off the muscle so blood circulation increases and recovering the muscle faster. Works well.
